Following the 13th National Election in Bangladesh, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, assumed office as Minister of Finance and Minister of Planning on 17 February 2026. He previously served as Minister of Commerce (2001–2004). He was first elected as an MP from Chittagong-8 in 1991 and re-elected in 1996, 2001, and 2026.


Born on 20 February 1950 in Chittagong District, he is the son of the late Alhaj Mahmudunnabi Chowdhury, an MP (1954) and Minister of Mass Communication in the United Front government. He graduated from Chittagong College in 1969, and later studied accountancy in London.


He is the founder and former Chairman of the Chittagong Stock Exchange and served twice as President of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He also served as Chairman of the South Asian Federation of Stock Exchanges, Central Depository Company of Bangladesh, and People’s Insurance Company. He was Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea and a member of Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA), New York.


He served on Parliamentary Standing Committees on Commerce (1991–1996) and Finance (1996–2001), represented Bangladesh at the United Nations General Assembly, and held roles in multiple national advisory committees, including export, revenue, industry, health, and police reform.


He is also the founder of Chittagong Independent University and Chairman of the Mahmudunnabi Chowdhury Foundation, which provides technical education and training.
